Renaissance Town of Ambois
The most interesting fact I’d heard about the town of Ambois was that Mick Jagger holidayed here when he was a kid and that he now owns a glamorous Château nearby. Ambois has long been attracting celebs. Leonardo de Vinci spent his last years here and there’s an interesting museum to his inventions including flying machines and a wooden tank at the Clos-Lucé at the back of town.

I can understand the attraction of Ambois; it’s laid-back and leisurely with lovely walks along the river and lots of restaurants. It not a party town, more of a social get-together for an older crowd (such as Monsieur Jagger) where you can simply sit around Rue Nationale or Rue Victor Hugo at one of the outdoor cafes and watch the world go by. Check out the troglodytes, grottos built into the limestone hillsides. Some are lived in and judging by their exterior very nice to but most are used as wine cellars keeping the wine at just the right storage temperature.
