Although the King’s Course will always stand as one of the finest examples of heathland golf in Scotland many find its sister course, the Queen’s perhaps in a gentler, more feminine way, as delightful. Local golfers will go as far as to say they prefer it.

All golfers are struck by the Queens’ gracefulness. To stand at the 9
th or 10th there is a temptation to set aside the clubs, wave the following group through and simply drink in the views. In fact, many do so at the conclusion of Pint Stoop, the 10th where there’s an all-to-convenient Halfway House.

The Queens is significantly shorter than the other two Gleneagles courses but it makes up for this in its tactical craftiness. With many risk-reward scenarios ahead, it is a shot-maker’s course that proves most exciting.

The axiom is if you can hold your score together on the front on the Queen’s you should score well for the round. Unusual for a James Braid design, the Queens tests from the outset. The 1
st is one of the toughest holes on the course! At 400 yards from the visitor tees, it doglegs left and up demanding an accurate tee shot to set up a reasonable crack at the green.

The 6
th is majestic hole that asks everything of your game, length, accuracy - and nerve. There’s OOB threatening the right side. Bunkers come into play off the tee as well as on the approach shots to the slightly elevated green. Everyone recalls the 10th with its sunken, gathering green tucked neatly behind two high hillocks and the Glen Devon backdrop.

The second half is generally a little bit shorter. There are Par 3’s, back to back at the 13
th and 14th with water in play on both. The 14th at around 180 yards, offers a two-tiered green raised high and guarded with deep bunkers. It’s an intimidating proposition.

The grand finale is the 18
th a lovely, elevated tee from where you view a fine swathe of Gleneagles’ real estate and make an exuberant drive into it.
