Since its return to the Open Championship circuit,
the Carnoustie Championship Course has
re-established itself as perhaps the greatest test
of golf in the world. That’s a fairly lofty
position to attain but few tour players would argue
especially recalling the 1999 event. With wind,
rain and wild rough in ascendance, this supreme
Scottish links course rose to full tournament
stature and quite frankly frightened a lot of the
more pampered players back to the clubhouse.
Carnoustie isn’t always so belligerent. It almost
welcomes the average golfer with generous fairways
and large, open greens. Of course there’s a
temptation to attack the ‘toughest golf course in
the world’ but as any good golfer knows, the more
composed and relaxed your game, the more you
discover the keys to the course. Carnoustie is no
exception! It will open up to steady, considered
play and unless the wind is high, it will return a
thoroughly rewarding round. There is no doubt you
need to be long off the tee and accurate with
lengthy approach shots; but how do you best achieve
that? Relax and let the club and these firm links
fairways do all the work!
